SLOW Down!
As I watch Facebook and Twitter, I see tons of posts about people fighting the icks, colds, the flu, the blahs, you name it. I don't want to get crazy, but perhaps it's a sign that it's time to slow down.
The One, Two, Three, Punch!
Over the past couple of months, most of us have been busy, busy, and busy. Holiday, after holiday and celebration after celebration, visiting friends and family, entertaining, and shopping, and trying to make sure everything was "perfect" is stressful and tiring. When is the last time you stopped, and took some time for yourself? January is a very high stress month, and stress makes your body more susceptible to sickness, and that is another immune system buster that makes it's hard for your body to operate at peak performance.
Many of us have spent time around other people who are either fighting colds, and or who have colds and infections who are carrying germs and other great things into your life every day. Whether they are sneezing and coughing around you, or they are silent carriers whose immune systems have fought off the infection, they are still exposing you to all those nice germs looking for a new home. Nice, right?
In order to give yourself the break it needs, odds are, you are going to have to slow down. The to do list may have to be on hold, and you may have to make getting some rest a high priority, but how do you do that with everything else you have on your plate.
Here are a few creative ways to take some of the pressure off.
1. The Say No First, Rule. It is important for you to say No to as many things as you can. Ask yourself if you are really the person that needs to do this, and then don't respond until you are sure that is true. There is a group of us, who hate the idea of saying no when we feel as if we could help, or say yes. Please hear me, if you say yes, and get sick, you won't be able to do anything. Say no now, and take the time you need to get your body back on track.
2. What you eat, really does matter, so eat clean. Diet really does make a difference, so make it your business to eat as many fruits and vegetables as possible, and eat fresh vs. canned, as often as possible. Do yourself a favor and overdue it. Fresh foods are easier for your body to process, and they also help you feel better. When you eat junk, it's another shock to your system. Give your body the right kind of fuel.
3. Take your vitamins and eat foods rich in vitamins, nutrients and anti-oxidants. It's a great time to give your body a little extra ammunition. Take that multi-vitamin, take extra doses of vitamin C, and eat foods that are high in Omega 3, Omega 6, and antioxidants that can give your body the boosts that it needs.
4. Sneak in naps, whenever possible. Make a habit of laying down even if it is only for a few minutes, a twenty minute nap is not only refreshing, it can really make you feel 100 times better. Sneak away in the middle of the day, or when you get home, or right after you settle in and prepare dinner.
5. Drink as much water as possible; Water is a really important part of our bodies successful operation. We need to make sure we drink water as often as possible. Be intentional about drinking water several times a day. Try drinking water before you eat, because in the winter, we tend to overeat because we eating foods instead of drinking water.
6. Take a Time out. During this time of the year, people are more irritable. Some people don't like the cold weather, or they just don't feel themselves because, they are fighting something, they are tired, or they are just rundown. Do yourself a favor and take some down time. Go to a quiet space, pray, read a book, just take some time to take a break from everything you need to do and breathe. There is nothing wrong with giving your self 20 minutes or so alone just to collect your self.
You can fight the blahs, and win you just have to be willing to give yourself the time and space to get back in balance. Don't be afraid to make changes and to change things up if they are not working. Pay attention to everything you are doing and then look at how you feel. If something is not working change it, and in no time you should be back to your good old 100% self again!
